Barefoot shoes in winter must combine two things: a flexible, wide barefoot footbed and enough warmth and protection against wet and cold conditions. Many winter models therefore feature a warming lining, a waterproof membrane or a slightly more robust treaded sole – but remain flat, flexible and without toe spring. This preserves the natural walking feel even at sub-zero temperatures.

Do your feet get cold in barefoot shoes in winter? Not with the right models: Lined winter barefoot shoes and warm wool soles keep your feet warm. With very thin models, warm socks also help – such as merino socks or the waterproof socks from Sealskinz.
Which models are waterproof? All with "Waterproof", "WP" or "GX2" in the name, as well as the rain boots. They keep out moisture and remain breathable. Purely lined models provide warmth but are not necessarily waterproof – for snow and mud, it is better to choose a WP model.
Is the barefoot feel preserved in winter? Yes, although a warming lining or winter sole slightly dampens the direct ground feel – the compromise for warm feet. The shoes nevertheless remain flat, flexible and without toe spring.
